Solucient Names Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center as One of Nation’s Top Performance Improvement Leaders

Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center has been selected as the only large community hospital in California to receive the 2005 Solucient 100 Top Hospitals Performance Improvement Leaders® award.

The award recognizes 100 hospitals nationwide in multiple categories that have improved performance over the last five years at a substantially faster rate than peers across the United States, according to a new study by Solucient, the nation’s leading source of health care information products.

"Five years of steady, well-aligned improvement means that these 100 Performance Improvement Leaders have enormously increased the value they provide to their communities," said Jean Chenowith, senior vice president, performance improvement & 100 Top programs, Center for Healthcare Improvement at Solucient.

Providence Saint Joseph was one of only three hospitals in California to be recognized by Solucient for this award. The other two hospitals were listed in the Medium Community Hospital category, while Providence Saint Joseph was one of 20 facilities nationwide listed in the Large Community Hospital category.

"It is a great honor to receive this award from Solucient, but even more so, this is a testament to our physicians, our nurses and all of our staff who work with skill and compassion to provide care to our patients," said Patrick Petre, Administrator of Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center

Solucient’s study found that the 100 hospitals listed as Performance Improvement Leaders made the following gains between 2000 and 2004:
§ Had fewer-than-expected patient complications, deaths and adverse safety events.
§ Improved financial stability.
§ Appropriately discharged patients two-thirds of a day earlier than five years ago.
§ Increased their expenses well below the national average.
§ Grew their patient volumes substantially more than did hospitals on average.

Solucient’s study looked at all U.S. hospitals licensed to treat Medicare patients. Nine performance measures were examined at each hospital: risk-adjusted mortality and complications, average length of stay, expenses, profitability, cash-to-debt ratio, growth in patient volume, tangible assets and risk-adjusted patient safety index.

Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center is a comprehensive not-for-profit health care organization. Comprised of 449 licensed beds, the Medical Center is the largest hospital in the San Fernando Valley. Founded in 1943, the medical center has more than 650 physicians on its medical staff, as well as 2,000 employees and volunteers. The medical center provides a variety of inpatient and outpatient health care services through its Cancer Center, Heart Center, Acute Rehabilitation Services, Home Health and Hospice and Women’s Services.
